DigiNole serves as the shared digital library and institutional repository platform at Florida State University and provides access to a wide range of digital content in a variety of formats. In many cases, especially with archival materials digitized from physical and analog sources, these materials are formatted in ways that make them difficult to use with adaptive or assistive technology such as screen readers. Florida State University Libraries is committed to making DigiNole as broadly accessible as possible, and to ensuring that access to its content is consistent with obligations under state and federal disabilities law, including the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Wherever feasible we have aimed to make the content of DigiNole accessible to all potential users through implementing features such as:
- Adding captioning to audio and video content
- Transcribing or applying optical character recognition (OCR) for PDF or other documents
Additionally, the interface of DigiNole has been audited and remediated for accessibility using automated, browser-based tools—specifically, WAVE and Google Lighthouse—whose evaluation engines are designed using WCAG standards.
